Tokar Dara

Tokar Dara is located near the Najigram Valley, approximately 6km from the ancient city of Barikot (Bazira). The main stupa, previously known as Tōkar-gumbat, is a notable feature of the site. In 1926, archaeologist Aurel Stein visited the site and acknowledged its suitability for systematic excavations. He identified two ancient water barrage ruins, which suggest the existence of an irrigation canal or cistern system in the area. Preliminary reports reveal the presence of the main stupa, an assembly hall, and residential buildings, with traces of a dome of cells still visible in the monastic area. The main stupa has a square base, measuring 22x22m, and consists of three storeys topped by a dome. It was adorned with at least five chattras (stone parasols). Excavations are currently in progress.
