This sculpture depicts the renounced prince, the Buddha-to-be, during his period of extreme asceticism.
His emaciated form, with sunken eyes and prominent ribs, powerfully conveys the physical toll of his spiritual quest. At the pedestal, two merchants are making offerings to the Buddha after he attained enlightenment.
